Building Bridges
The main focus of 'Building Bridges' project has been exploring the historical links between Wales and Jamaica, and now the aim in to create new links by 'building bridges' between communities in both countries that develop better understanding and benefit both communities.
Jamaican poet, Yasus Afari, visited Wales as part of his 2007 Black History Month UK Tour. Yasus had seen a documentary on Wales and was fascinated by the history of the dominance of the Welsh nation by the English, and the shared history.
In 2008 Yasus Afari performed at an event called 'Building Bridges' at Moelyci Environmental Centre, with poet Richard Douglas Pennant, the descendant of the Pennant Family, the origin of whose wealth tracks back the the Pennant family plantations in Jamaica.
Since then, 'Learning Links International', the organisation founded by Yasus Afari and Liz Millman, has continued to explore ways to 'Build Bridges' between Wales and Jamaica.
